Community Education: Bridges to Formal Education

Literacy, an important tool for feeding out of schools youth especially girls to formal education system and non-formal vocational and other income-oriented skills training offered by the Program, is increased considerably.

Community-based education (pre-school, primary school and literacy classes) opportunities in working areas, facilitate children in particularly girls from disadvantaged families, for admission to government school and vocational training opportunities. All families living in difficult circumstances (FDC), parents and their children above four years take part in Community-owned education activities. Girls from FDCs are given a chance for secondary education scholarship, and cluster primary schools at commune level are promoted as child friendly schools, within the national policy framework of "Education for All". Teachers are selected from among the community people and receive training supported by the Program. Community Education Committees (CEC) are established in each village and trained in school governance.
