Serving up coffee to expats and jobs to Cambodians

The first Cambodian AdVenture seemed simple. Rent a small shop and serve coffee and cookies! In retrospect, that proved just a bit naive.

But after 18 months mixed with sweat and laughter, the foundation for the future is firmly planted. That future, we hope, will soon see this 'shop' transformed into a successful business.

The Tuol Koak Coffee Grounds opens Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Five well-trained ladies make and serve a wide variety of coffee and fruit drinks, desserts and lunches. All food items, from cranberry scones to chicken quiche, from cappuccino cheesecake to chocolate chip cookies, from nutty tuna pitas to pizza pockets, are freshly baked on sight.

Customer feedback suggests the services and environment more than meet expectations. Now, we simply need more people to come enjoy the experience.

What about the future? More marketing; perhaps some special events; eventually, we hope to train and hire more Cambodians.

Fresh scones -cranberry, oatmeal or cheese- being prepared, along with banana chocolate chip cake and mango pie. Most ingredients for these 'foreign' recipes are now available in Cambodia.

Real opportunities,
at least for some

AdVenture Cambodia wants to give poor and disadvantaged people the opportunity to transform life through economic opportunity.

A small team of Cambodians will learn to develop a product or provide a service in response to specific markets that are discovered. The focus will be on skills training for Cambodians. Learning will take place in the context of a small business adventure.

Outsiders will provide start-up money necessary to train people, make necessary capital expenditures, and provide support for salaries. Efforts will be made to limit outside support to one year.

The Coffee Grounds adventure succeeded in its main objective. Three of the five ladies come from very poor families who live and survive around Phnom Penh's main garbage dump. Now, each lady provides cash income for the family and a positive roll model to younger siblings.

Fishpond Productions currently trains and employs two young men, both still studying computers in one of Phnom Penh's many private 'universities.'

One synonym for "small business" is "venture." One step further, synonyms for venture include "undertaking, endeavor, scheme, gamble and risk." Venture is an appropriate word for small business schemes in Cambodia. AdVenture Cambodia will implement somewhat risky schemes aimed at training and employing Cambodian people currently without jobs but willing to work hard.
